Over the past few years I've come to love fashion, which is something my high school self would probably never believe. No one in my family has ever been into fashion, and the school I went to was very clique-y, my only objective when it came to clothes was blending in, buying the popular brand names so I wouldn't stand out.
I hated standing out.
But when I got to university, something changed. There were no more cliques, no more daily judgement. I discovered online fashion retailers, fashion bloggers, a way of expressing myself.
I fell in love.
It started off small, buying a Birds of North America skirt, which I hardly had enough money for at the time, and only managed to wear twice. But over time I was able to get rid of everything that touted a brand name, a life style I no longer wanted to associate with. Vintage was the first thing to catch my eye, classic silhouettes, elegant styles.
I loved independent designers, they were different, and that's finally what I wanted to be.
After some time people would regularly be complimenting my outfits and my style, things like "you're always so chic." These compliments were amazing, but they felt strange, like I was still the young nerdy girl, just trying to fit in, surely the comments weren't meant for me. But they were, somehow fashion has become a part of me, people know me for how I present myself, the clothes I choose to buy.
And I love it, I can't imagine myself without fashion and I can't see a future without having a hand in it. Clothes have become a creative outlet for me, they've increased my confidence and created connections.
I can't wait to see where it takes me in 2013!
